Managing Construction Traffic Safely – How ISG is Contributing to Community Safety

ISG has achieved an impressive CLOCS score of 26/27 for its Hawkfield Studios project in Bristol demonstrating their commitment to improving road safety for local communities in relation to construction traffic. But the story begins before that…

The Southern Construction Framework team took the decision that all projects tendered and won after January 2020 were to be CLOCS ( Construction Logistics and Community Safety) registered and CLOCS principles applied in a bid to safeguard road users potentially affected by framework projects.

The introduction of this requirement provided ISG with the opportunity to review their traffic management procedures to ensure that the processes complemented and reinforced CLOCS requirements. A decision was made at a senior level in the company that all live Southern Construction Framework projects would register with CLOCS, the first being the North Devon Enterprise Centre EU funded project in Barnstable.

Chris Bartlett, ISG Project Manager was appointed CLOCS champion, and began to work with supply chain partners to influence the use of FORS accredited logistic companies. A comprehensive construction logistics plan was developed which was supported by a  thorough driver induction programme and a bespoke database to log and track CLOCS self-certificate forms/deliveries/FORS status and vehicle inspections.

The lessons learned on the NDEC project have been taken, understood and implemented on other projects,  with CLOCS audit scores improving with each subsequent framework project, and this concluded with the impressive score of 26 on the Hawkfield Studios project.

Mark Mortell, ISG Health and Safety Director said,

“ISG are proud CLOCS champions and working with the SCF framework team has allowed us as a business to focus and refine the existing procedures to further improve the safety of all our stakeholders including site teams, road users and pedestrians.

The project team at NDEC did a great job implementing the CLOCS principles which are subsequently being applied across the wider ISG business. The increase in CLOCS audit scores on each project demonstrates that we as a business, our supply chain partners, and the framework are striving to improve all the time.”
